 Looking at Aina Ibukunoluwa Samuel, a First Class graduate of Mechanical Engineering, University of Lagos (UNILAG), it would be hard to believe that his long walk to greatness started from a local automobile workshop. At 16, he dropped out of secondary school in his final year because his parents could not pay his registration fee for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). When his mates were writing the exam, he found himself in an automobile workshop as a motor mechanic, where he spent two years learning the black-collar job. Undeterred by this setback, he returned to school, gained admission in 2008 and graduated with a First Class degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The acting registrar of the institution, Mr O.R.A. Okechukwu, said that the university is working to meet the requirements by the NUC to gain recognition for the programme. The affected students,on their own part are lamenting over the fact that they are going to spend two additional sessions in the institution when their contemporaries must have graduated.

The funeral service of one of our own; Okwudili Ephraim Offia-Nwafor who died on the 21st of April,2014 during a swimming exercise has been fixed. The ceremony will take place at his fathers compound at Umudim village in Ndikelionwu town of Orumba North LGA, Anambra State, on the 5th of July,2014 by 9:00am. According to the Zambian Times, a twenty seven year old man of Chisamba who had sex with a chicken has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour by a Kabwe High Court. Kabwe High Court judge-in-charge, Mwiinde Siavwapa sentenced Goliath Nyirenda, a general worker to 15 years imprisonment for having canal knowledge of a chicken. Nyirenda on November 18, 2012 had sex with his neighbour's chicken which shortly died after the act. In Sentencing Nyirenda, Mr Justice Siavwapa said it was inhuman to have sex with a chicken and that the act was bordering on abnormality. "I find your conduct disgusting and inhuman. It is unacceptable for a person in their right frame of mind to have sex with a chicken, so I therefore sentence you to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour," Mr Justice Siavwapa said.

A 32-year-old factory worker, Ifeanyi Chukwu, who allegedly beat and threatened to kill his mother, on Thursday appeared before an Abule Egba Magistrates' Court. The accused is facing a three-count charge of assault, threatening by violence and causing damage. The prosecutor, Insp. Racheal Williams, told the court that the offences were committed on June 15 at their residence. She said Chukwu always beat his mother whenever he was drunk. She said he also beat his mum whenever she rebuked him for coming home late. Williams told the court that the accused also threatened to kill his mother and his sisters. "A fight ensued between them and after beating his mother, the accused damaged four windows and a wooden door, valued at N25,000," she said. The mother, Mrs Helen Chukwu, said her son was not responsible, adding, "he smokes and always gets drunk whenever he is coming home. Delegates at Thursday's plenary, while considering the report of the Conference Committee on Civil Society, Labour, Youths and Sports, chaired by Bola Ogunrinade, unanimously adopted the committee's recommendation that death penalty be meted out to anyone found guilty of raping a minor. They also unanimously agreed that any government official found guilty of embezzling public funds or monies meant for pensioners be given life imprisonment. The conference also proposed 50 years imprisonment for any judicial officer found guilty of corruption or abuse of office and to be stripped of all official entitlements. Following peaceful demonstrations at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife against tuition fee hikes introduced by the management of the university in May 2014, the administration this evening announced an indefinite shutdown of the institution and ordered students to vacate its premises by Thursday afternoon. A statement signed by D. O. Awoyemi, Registrar and Secretary to the university council cited "persistent disruption of normal activities and peace on campus as a result of violent demonstrations by students, led by the Student Union Executive," as the rationale for the decision. "Consequently, all students are directed to vacate their Halls of Residence and the University premises immediately and not later than 12 noon on Thursday, 19th June, 2014," the statement said. The federal government has revealed a plot by the Boko Haram insurgents to carry out a massive attack in different locations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Coordinator of the National Information Centre and Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Mike Omeri, made the revelation yesterday during a media briefing on the update of the fight against insurgency and effort to rescue the abducted Chibok schoolgirls. According to Omeri, the insurgents plan to hijack fully loaded petro tankers from their drivers, plant explosives in them and move the vehicles to destinations where they are expected to cause monumental destruction of life and property. "The Nigerian security services have received intelligence report to the effect that insurgents intend seizing petrol tankers and planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the tankers and driving them to crowed places in Abuja," Omeri said. -----------------------------------------------------

The Anambra State Police Command had a very busy day yesterday as it demolished two buildings belonging to alleged kidnap suspects in Ogidi, Idemili North local government and Ojoto South Local Government of the state.It also paraded 17 suspects involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, hijacking of goods and girls involved in faking vehicle plate numbers and licences. The State Police Commissioner, Usman Gwary, led the squad for the demolition operation along with the commander of the state Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), James Nwafor.
