The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA has reacted to the photos of Indian Hemp posted by Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh, on the social media, boasting that "I smoke ganja". Disclosing that Tonto Dikeh may spend the next 15 years in prison for daring to smoke Igbo and expose it, the NDLEA spokesman, Mitchell Ofoyeju said:     “Our attention has been drawn to the post quite frankly and I can tellyou that action will be taken on it. The law is clear and NDLEA has been very clear on the issue. No one is permitted to sell, use, cultivate or encourage the use of Indian hemp in Nigeria. The weed is one of the banned narcotics in the country." Students of polytechnics in Ogun State yesterday took to the streets of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital in protest over the strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics, SSANIP. The students, numbering over 200, drawn from three polytechnics in Ilaro, Igbesa and Abeokuta under the auspices of National Association of Polytechnics Students, Ogun State axis blocked some major roads in the ancient city, disrupting commercial activities and vehicular movement, armed with placards with inscriptions such as: ‘Government please. don’t jeopardise our future’, ‘Government, don’t destroy polytechnics’, ‘Federal Government please save our souls’ and ‘Our lecturers deserve the best’ among others. The appointment of 18 senior staff of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), including two professors, has been terminated by the Governing Council of the school. The former bursar of the institution, Mrs May Nwoye, was also asked to proceed on compulsory retirement by the Council. Nwoye was said to have abandoned his duty post after she left the office of bursar. Meanwhile, the university has been ranked as the most sought after institution in the country with a total number of 102,900 applicants in 2013, while universities of Ilorin, Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe and University of Nigeria Nsukka came second, third, fourth and fifth respectively. Those were contained in a statement by the UNIBEN Registrar, Mrs G.O.Ogboghodo when she announced the sack of the eighteen senior staff of the university.

It's finally happened. If you live in California, you are now free to marry your gay partner as gay marriage has been made legal in the state. The Supreme Court this morning ruled against California's controversial Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in the state. Saudi Arabia on Sunday said it was switching its official weekend to Friday and Saturday, bringing the kingdom’s working week in line with other members of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council. Saudi Arabia, the biggest Arab economy, had been the only Gulf Arab state to have a Thursday-Friday weekend after Oman shifted to a Friday-Saturday weekend last month. A statement on national Saudi news agency SPA said the change, decreed by King Abdullah, will take effect as of this weekend, “for the sake of putting an end to the negative effects and the lost economic opportunities consistently associated with variation based on work days between local departments, ministries and institutions and the regional and international counterparts.” King Abdullah issued the decree following a recommendation in April by the Kingdom’s Shura Council, which advises the government on new laws, to change the country’s official weekend from the current Thursday and Friday.

Seun left her hostel last week Sunday to visit her boyfriend and that was the last time she was seen alive. The Creative Arts students of the University of Lagos this morning protested over alleged sexual harassment of female students in the department by their lecturers. The students stormed the Arts block this morning with placards to register their grievance and later moved their protest to the Social Science department. Female students of the department claim their lecturers are making life difficult for them by demanding sexual favours before they can pass their courses. The students say they have had enough and after a meeting yesterday, decided to protest against the sexual harassment that has become the order of the day.
