University informs parents of students who drowned while taking selfie

The students had taken part in a practical class, then decided to have some photo session using a canoe at the nearby pond.
The management of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, (FUTA) has officially informed the parents of two students who drowned in the school lake on Saturday, July 1.
The two students, Olabiyi Emmanuel from the department of Agricultural and
Environmental Engineering (AGE) 300 level, and Olokun Babatunde Alex from the department of Project Management Technology., reportedly drowned while trying to take selfie at a fishing pond in the school.

According to Premium Times, the students had taken part in a mandatory entrepreneurship practical class, then decided to have some photo sessions using a canoe at the nearby pond.

However, the spokesperson of the university, Gbenro Adebanjo has confirmed the official notification saying the university sympathised with the parents.
“FUTA reiterates its commitment to the safety of its students and safety measures where the the incident took place is already being reviewed in order to prevent future occurrence,”.
“Rescue efforts were immediately mobilised which the Dean of Students, Professor Kayode Alese coordinated,”
Adebanjo also said that two of the students were rescued minutes after the incident, while despite all efforts two of them Olabiyi Emmanuel and Olokun Babatunde Alex died.
