'ASUU- Students Go Home' By Chidimma Okafor :
For the serious minded, the statements are usually like this; 'It’s so annoying'. 'Umhmm, only God knows when we will resume now'. And for the optimist; 'ASUU strike called off...live on cartoon network'. These are just a few of the statements that have become bourgeois over the last few weeks. Apart from a fortunate minority attending private universities, the ASUU strike has sent all students home. This is very vexatious, because of our academic calendar. What I find even more annoying, is the amebo question;
'Una done come house again?'.
'Una done come house again?'.
Well, for the students in their first or second year, welcome to the university system in Nigeria, where you plan 5years for a 4year course, and end up staying 6yrs, 9months. For those of us who have been in the system, we are no strangers to strike, well, welcome once again. Generally, as irritating as the unwarranted break is, we have make the best of it. We could follow our parents to work, or do a few odd jobs at home, because we all know an idle mind is the devil's workshop, and a lot of students get into trouble during strikes. This also the time to read our books, because when the strike is called off, they usually make us pay for it by rushing our scheme of work.
That is for us. For the government, they really should listen to the lecturers. For the lecturers who claim they love us, they should understand that the government has nothing to lose, rather as the saying goes, when two elephants fight; it is the grass that suffers. We hope these elephants settle, because the grass is suffering!....
