Kanife Kanamuo speaks on the problem with ASUU
Kanife Kanamuo is a writer whom I met at Chimamanda Adichie's 'Farafina Trust Creative writing workshop, 2012'. He made this brilliant update on facebook a few minutes ago, so I decided to share it with you guys.
"I
think the problem with education (ASUU) in Nigeria is just the problem
with the refusal to practice true federalism. Grant the universities a
degree of autonomy. Allow them determine fees but constitute a
regulatory body for them so they don't over charge. Subsidize education.
Most of these issues would now be in the hands of the university
authorities. No more strikes, unless they want to strike within
themselves. Truth be told, Nigerian students are not paying nearly
enough for quality education. That affects the standard of education.
The University of Florida which is a public university pays a tuition
fee of 5,020 dollars, that's about 750,000 Naira in a year. That's for
tuition only. The average Nigerian federal university student pays an
entire school fee of 60,000 Naira. The difference is clear. I'm not
saying students should start paying 750k. That would be suicidal. I'm
only saying we're getting our moneys worth of education. If we want the
quality of the education to rise just a notch, someone has to pay for
that notch. Not the government, the students especially must make
significant sacrifice. Despite all the American government grants it's
public schools, their students still pay that much for tuition alone. An
entire school fees is 18,380 dollars. That's almost three million
Naira. Who wan pay am? I think autonomy is the way to go. With of course
a body to regulate the highhandedness of the university dons. The
biggest problem that would rock true autonomy still remains chronic
